Palainco.com, the website devoted to lighting design, has published an extensive interview with Bruno Gecchelin, translated from the Italian.

It begins with his passion for cars and drawing. In 1959, while still a teenager, Bruno wrote to General Motors. At twenty, he joined Ettore Sottsass’s office at Olivetti, where he came to understand the difference between styling and industrial design, working on sketches, reviewing details with the engineers and practising photography.

What followed were his degree in Architecture, the founding of his studio in Milan and a long career in lighting, with companies including Oluce, Arteluce, Venini, iGuzzini and Japan’s Matsushita. Bruno reflects on his method, his relationship with companies and the role he believes a designer should play.

The title derives from one of his remarks: he possessed the ability never to repeat himself.
